报告简介:

How long does it take to break a chemical bond? The answer, about a hundred femtoseconds, reveals a hidden world inside every arrow of a chemical equation. Today, X-ray free-electron lasers, synchrotrons, and ultrafast lasers allow chemists to record “molecular movies” of electrons and atoms in motion. At the same time, quantum chemistry and artificial intelligence predict structures and reactions before they are made, and chemists design molecules and materials atom by atom for specific purposes. This lecture introduces three shifts that define next-generation chemistry: seeing, computing, and designing. Using examples from catalysis for clean chemical production and CO2 conversion, I will show how concepts from undergraduate courses become the tools of frontier research. Orbitals, oxidation states, rate laws, and free energy are the same ideas we use to follow electrons in a working catalyst with element-specific, time-resolved X-ray spectroscopy. I will share one research story, from the initial question to the final mechanism, including the unexpected results that often lead to discovery. Finally, I will offer a practical roadmap for students who wish to pursue research careers.
